タピオ・ヴィルッカラ (1915-1985)
タピオ・ヴィルッカラはフィンランドデザインの巨匠の一人です。ヴィルッカラはイッタラのガラス工芸のデザインで知られていますが、陶磁器やジュエリー、木材等その他の素材を使ったデザインでも成功をおさめています。同時に彼は彫刻家でありグラフィックデザイナーでもありました。ヴィルッカラはフィンランドの通過であるマルクを1955年にデザインし、1960年代にはフィンランディアのボトルもデザインしました。
タピオ・ヴィルッカラは広告業界にてキャリアを始めましたが、すぐに1946年に開かれたいたらのガラスデザインコンテストに参加し、最優秀賞をとります。このコンテストがきっかけとなり、イッタラでの彼のキャリアはスタートしました。1940年代にイッタラはデザイナーたちに新しいモデルを創るため、出来る限りの機会を与えており、ヴィルッカラのカンタレッリ(Kanttarelli)を始めとする有名な作品が生まれたのもこの時期でした。 その他ではヤカラベース（Jakala vase)やタピオのガラスシリーズが有名です。
1951年のミラノのトリエンナーレはフィンランドのデザイン及びタピオ・ヴィルッカラのキャリアの始まりとなります。彼はそこでフィンランド展のブースをデザインし驚く事に建築、ポリウッド、ガラス照明の３つのカテゴリーにて受賞をするのです。さらに1954年のトリエンナーレにおいてもヴィルッカラはその他の３つの賞を受賞します。
1959年にヴィルッカラと彼の妻はラップランドにサマーコテージ（別荘）を購入しました。ラップランドの自然は彼にとって常にインスピレーションを与える自然風景でありました。その影響は有名なウルティマ・トューレ(Ultima Thule)のシリーズで見られる氷のような表面の処理等に見られます。この氷の世な表面を表すためにイッタラの工場では何百時間という時間がかけられました。
タピオ・ヴィルッカラはまぎれもない天才であり、フィンランドデザインへの貢献は計り知れないものです。彼のデザイナーとしての偉業は国際的にも認められており、イギリスのロイヤルカレッジオブアートからは名誉博士の称号を与えられています。
Tapio Wirkkala is one of the great master`s of Finnish design. Wirkkala is mostly known for his work as Iittala`s glass designer, but he was successful working with various different kinds of materials including stoneware, jewelry and plywood. He is also a well-known graphic designer and a sculptor. Wirkkala designed the Finnish Markka- banknotes introduced in year 1955 and Finlandia vodka-bottle in the 1960s.
Tapio Wirkkala started his career in advertisement, but soon after he participated in a glass design contest organized by Iittala in 1946 where he was awarded with the first price. This competition marked the start for Wirkkala`s career at Iittala. At the end of 1940s Iittala gave designers almost unlimited opportunities in creating new models, and it was during these times that Wirkkala produced his most famous pieces such as Kanttarelli. Other notable Tapio Wirkkala pieces include the Jakala vases and the Tapio utility glass series.
The 1951 Milano Triennale can be considered groundbreaking in terms of Finnish design history and in terms of Tapio Wirkkala`s personal career. For the 1951 Triennale Wirkkala designed Finland`s exhibition stands and it was in this specific Triennale that Wirkkala was awarded in staggering three categories: in architecture, in plywood design, and in glass lighting design. Wirkkala continued the winning stream yet again in the next Milano Triennale in 1954, where he scored another three wins.
Tapio Wirkkala and his wife purchased a summer cottage in Lapland. Lapland`s nature was a constant source of inspiration for Wirkkala. Lapland`s influence can for example be seen in the popular Ultima Thule series, which portray a certain icy surface effect. This icy effect took thousands of hours of developmental work at Iittala factory to get it just right.
Tapio Wirkkala was a true genius whose heritage to Finnish design is undisputable. He is an internationally recognized designer, and among many of his accomplishments Wirkkala was given the Honorary Doctorate at the Royal College of Art in the UK in 1971.
